City of Phoenix Park-n-Ride Solar Facility

Solar panels were mounted on the top of a shaded parking canopy. These panels generate electricity to power the security guard station as well as provide lighting for the parking lot. The NCE installed temperature sensors to record the temperatures above and below the canopies and at the surface of the exposed and non exposed [...]

Pavement Temperature Modeling

Objective
Create a computation model to estimate the surface and subsurface temperature within multi-layered pavement systems.
Methodology
Using fundamental heat transfer principles to create a one dimensional finite difference model. Used data collected from testing sites to calibrate the model for different weather conditions. Inputs required: meteorological information (3 day wind speed, solar radiation, air temperature and dew [...]

Albedo of Urban Infrastructure

Objective
Determine correlations between albedo (solar reflectance), pavement material type and age for roads, parking lots and connector streets located with in an urban area.
Methodology
Measure albedo at over 40 locations around the City of Tempe, Arizona.  Collect information about each surface (traffic volumes, age, material type).  Analyze results to determine whether correlation and trends exist.
Significance
Albedo is [...]

Cylindrical Thermal Conductivity Testing Apparatus

Objective
Measure thermal conductivity, an important material property for thermal analysis, using a cylindrical sample geometry.
Methodology
Developed a new test procedure and apparatus that measures the thermal conductivity of insulation materials such as pavements and other building materials. Determine accuracy and repeatability of the test apparatus through extensive statistical testing.
Significance
Accurate thermal property information for pavement and building [...]

Monitoring Temperatures in Highway Pavements

Objective
Quantify the temperature profile within two different highway material designs.
Methodology
Install temperature sensors at varying depths in the interstate highway. One section is made of full depth Portland Cement Concrete and the other a Concrete with Rubberized Asphalt Friction Course Overlay. Collect data for several months.  Measure the thermal properties of the high using core samples.
Significance
First [...]
