Pavement Temperature Modeling
Objective
Create a computation model to estimate the surface and subsurface temperature within multi-layered pavement systems.
Methodology
Using fundamental heat transfer principles to create a one dimensional finite difference model. Used data collected from testing sites to calibrate the model for different weather conditions. Inputs required: meteorological information (3 day wind speed, solar radiation, air temperature and dew point) and pavement material properties (thermal conductivity, density, specific heat, thickness, albedo, emissivity).
Significance
This model allows for quick and simple results using readily available data. Architects, pavement engineers and climatologist will benefits from understanding how their design and material choices will impact surface temperatures.
